A ritual, not a feed.

For over a century, himekuri pads hung in Japanese kitchens and shopfronts: a thick block of days, thinned one morning at a time by hand. This is that object brought back digitally — not reinvented, not improved, just kept.

Himekuri doesn't follow your digital calendar. It won't sync, remind, or turn its own page. You are the one advancing the dates, and, like its real counterpart, a torn page cannot be glued back on. There are no streaks, no graphs. The pad simply waits for your hand, a daily ritual from January to December — from season to season.

Paper that read the papers.

The page is a simulated sheet — inextensible, stiff in the plane, pinned under the staples. Its behavior comes from the mechanics literature, not from an easing curve.

Paper is stiff — pinch it and it buckles into a single smooth cone with a crescent crease beside your fingertip, never the soft gathers of cloth. The page puckers exactly there, under your cursor.

The tear

Starting a tear takes real force. Then stress concentrates at the crack tip and every fiber's failure overloads the next — the last stretch rips itself while the page is still in your hand. Let go early and it rests half-torn.

The fall

A wide, light sheet doesn't tumble — it flutters: gliding sideways, banking into each swoop, sinking at a steady terminal speed. The torn page inherits your throw, sails, and slips off the bottom of the screen.

What is a himekuri?
日めくり (hi-me-ku-ri) is the Japanese daily tear-off calendar — a thick pad of pages, one per day, hung on a wall. Each morning you tear off yesterday. The pad gets thinner as the year goes; that's the whole interface. Himekuri puts one on your Mac desktop.
Is the tearing a canned animation?
No. The page is a simulated sheet — it can't stretch, it creases under your cursor, and the tear starts hard and runs away once the fibers give, the way real paper fractures. You can half-tear a page and leave it hanging. When it falls, it flutters past your other windows and off the bottom of the screen.
What happens at midnight?
Nothing. Today's page waits for you to tear it — that's the ritual. The pad never turns its own page, so the date only advances by hand.
Can I get a torn day back?
No. Torn is torn — that's the point of a himekuri. (If the pad drifted while your Mac was asleep, the menu bar has Reset to Today.)
Does it understand the Japanese and Chinese calendars?
Yes. The pages carry the Japanese era (令和), rokuyō, and the old lunisolar date; the Koyomi theme is a traditional Japanese almanac, and the Huangli theme is a Chinese one — sexagenary year, zodiac, and the lunar date in 初/廿 numerals, leap months included. All of it is computed from the system's calendars, in any region.
Is it free?
Yes — free, with no ads, no account, and no paid version. If it earns a place on your desktop, small contributions are welcome but never required.
What does it need?
macOS 12 or later, about 5 MB of disk, and one corner of your desktop. No permissions, no network — it only needs to know today's date.
Is it open source?
Yes — the whole app is on GitHub under the MIT license, at github.com/pluk-inc/himekuri. The paper simulation and the tear model are the interesting parts, and help with the falling animation is genuinely wanted.
